Build Your Own Wake Skate
By Chris Patterson

The following is a step by step description on how you can turn an old wakeboard into a quality wake skate.

Tools required:
Circular Saw or Jigsaw with angle cutting ability
Drill and 1/4" drill bit
Masking tape
Marking pen
Tape measure/Ruler
Dremel Tool
Fiberglass Resin and mixing tools (I use Bondo brand Fiberglass Repair-find it at Wal-Mart or automotive stores)
Sandpaper
Packing tape
Latex Gloves

The Victim The board we're going to use for this is a DoubleUp SpinOff 135. This board's design is really good for building a wakeskate because of it's extra rocker. This particular board was left a little too close to a space heater and suffered some damage-the foam core contracted inside the top sheet, and then cracked when ridden again. For my personal board I used a SuperSquirt that had been run over by a car. Whatever your reason, if you have an old board laying around, here's your chance to make one mean skate out of it.

Melted Board

Step One:
First determine a length for your wake skate--I tend to use between 110 and 115 cm long, but hey this is your baby-do whatever length you like.

Determine what has a smoother surface, the top or bottom of your board. Take the roll of masking tape, and lay a strip on the board from tip to tail along the bottom, with one edge of the tape lining up through the center of the stock fin holes-this will give you a straight line down the middle of the board-use a marking pen to draw a line along this edge in about 15 inches from the tip/tail of the board. Use a ruler to make a perpendicular line at the length you decide for your board. If cutting a board like a Byerly, or Belmont, you will want to make your perpendicular marks on the top of the board where the surface is smoother-it's hard to get a saw to cut straight when running over channels or molded in stuff.
